Valentine’s Day at St. Al’s

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” ~ John 15:12

What a beautiful passage from the Bible to reflect on as we head into school this week and celebrate as we share kindness and friendship with one another. At St. Al’s School, we strive to recognize and acknowledge the inherent goodness in each other. Being inclusive means we try to make every day like Valentine’s day by teaching and learning about how to always offer kindness and respect to each other and ourselves too.  We show our appreciation for our school community by using kind words, keeping our school clean, making safe choices at recess and committing to attending school each day, ready to learn and contribute.

On Tuesday, February 14th, we will share in a school-wide spirit day: Red, White and Pink Day! All students and staff are encouraged to participate by wearing these colors in celebration together.

If you choose to send in sweet treats for your child(ren) to share with their classmates, please ensure that they are:

  • store-bought and packaged with the ingredients listed
  • nut-free

Valentine’s cards and non-edible treats (e.g., pencils, stickers, etc.) are also welcome as an alternative to candy.

Term 1 Report Cards and Kindergarten Communication of Learning

A reminder that our Term 1 report cards will be distributed on Friday, February 17th. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to review the report card with their child, celebrate growth, and identify a next step for Term 2. If your child is supported with an Individual Education Plan, the IEP will be sent home along with the term one report card. Although formal interviews occurred in November, please feel free to connect with your child’s teacher if you have concerns or questions about your child’s progress.

School Entry between 9:00 am and 3:30 pm

Please note that any parent/guardian who is coming to school for an appointment, is picking up/dropping off their child(ren), a lunch, etc. will need to come to the front doors of the school. Access to the school from the parking lot after the bell has rung will no longer be permitted for student safety. Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Families,

Although it’s hard to believe, we are halfway through our 2022/2023 school year!  With the cold winter weather upon us, we have offered our students opportunities to become engaged with one another in some intramural activities and the response has been wonderful! School spirit and friendship are in the air!

Please find below some updates from the school:

Term 1 Report Cards

Our Term 1 report cards will be distributed on February 17th. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to review the report card with their child, celebrate growth, and identify a next step for Term 2. If you wish to discuss the report card with your child’s teacher, kindly indicate the request when you sign/return page 4.

Winter Weather: Cold Warning

As a reminder, here are the WCDSB Winter Weather Inclement procedures that we follow at St. Aloysius:

When schools are open during cold weather, special consideration is given to the safety and well-bring of our students while they are outside at recess, lunch and/or for other outdoor activities. Temperatures and conditions vary across the Region of Waterloo and the WCDSB uses www.weather.ca to assess local conditions.

During the winter months, the temperature (including windchill or “feels like”) is monitored before school as well as throughout the day prior to all recesses and outdoor time.

  • Temperatures between -20°C and -27°C students will not be outside longer than 15 minutes
  • Temperatures colder than -27°C students will remain inside

Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8:45 am – 15 minutes before the bell. Our staff supervisors are on duty at that time, and, depending on the weather outside at this time, students may be directed to come straight inside.

Bundle up and stay warm!

Shrove Tuesday

On Tuesday, February 21st, we will be celebrating Shrove Tuesday with a school-wide pancake breakfast following morning announcements. Students will receive pancakes with syrup that will be delivered by our intermediate student helpers. Kindly reach out to your child’s teacher if your child requires a gluten/dairy-free option. Note: please make sure your child still brings a lunch on this day.

We look forward to enjoying pancakes together as we begin to focus on our Lenten journey of 2023.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
